Optimal Transport Maps in Monge-Kantorovich Problem

چکیده
In the first part of the paper we briefly decribe the classical problem, raised by Monge in 1781, of optimal transportation of mass. We discuss also Kantorovich’s weak solution of the problem, which leads to general existence results, to a dual formulation, and to necessary and sufficient optimality conditions. In the second part we describe some recent progress on the problem of the existence of optimal transport maps. We show that in several cases optimal transport maps can be obtained by a singular perturbation technique based on the theory of Γ-convergence, which yields as a byproduct existence and stability results for classical Monge solutions. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 49K, 49J, 49Q20.

Characterization of the Optimal Plans for the Monge-kantorovich Transport Problem
We present a general method, based on conjugate duality, for solving a convex minimization problem without assuming unnecessary topological restrictions on the constraint set. It leads to dual equalities and characterizations of the minimizers without constraint qualification. As an example of application, the Monge-Kantorovich optimal transport problem is solved in great detail. In particular,...
متن کاملOn Fluid mechanics formulation of Monge-Kantorovich Mass Transfer Problem
The Monge-Kantorovich mass transfer problem is equivalently formulated as an optimal control prblem for the mass transport equation. The equivalency of the two problems is establish using the Lax-Hopf formula and the optimal control theory arguments. Also, it is shown that the optimal solution to the equivalent control problem is given in a gradient form in terms of the potential solution to th...
متن کاملCharacterization of Optimal Transport Plans for the Monge-kantorovich-problem
We prove that c-cyclically monotone transport plans π optimize the Monge-Kantorovich transportation problem under an additional measurability condition. This measurability condition is always satisfied for finitely valued, lower semi-continuous cost functions. In particular, this yields a positive answer to Problem 2.25 in C. Villani’s book. We emphasize that we do not need any regularity condi...
متن کاملA saddle-point approach to the Monge-Kantorovich optimal transport problem
The Monge-Kantorovich problem is revisited by means of a variant of the saddle-point method without appealing to c-conjugates. A new abstract characterization of the optimal plans is obtained in the case where the cost function takes infinite values. It leads us to new explicit sufficient and necessary optimality conditions. As by-products, we obtain a new proof of the well-known Kantorovich du...
متن کاملSolutions to Monge-Kantorovich equations as stationary points of a dynamical system
Solutions to Monge-Kantorovich equations, expressing optimality condition in mass transportation problem with cost equal to distance, are stationary points of a critical-slope model for sand surface evolution. Using a dual variational formulation of sand model, we compute both the optimal transport density and Kantorovich potential as t → ∞ limit of evolving sand flux and sand surface, respecti...
